The concept of the variety store originated with the five and ten, five and dime, nickel or dime, and ten-cent store or dime store (10 cents), a store offering a wide assortment of inexpensive items for personal and household use.
This past weekend we made a trip to a favorite local store of ours, Vidler’s 5 and 10 Variety Store! Vidler’s really does have a crazy variety of cool things you can purchase! Anything from decorating your home (inside and out), personal care, toys, kitchen needs, gag gifts, games, an awesome selection of candy, and SO much more! But it’s not just about what you can take home – you get an experience.
The outside of the store will surely catch your eye. It shows a lot of charm and is very welcoming. What is really neat is that this very store opened in 1930, and it has the same original floors and open counters that they opened with! When it comes to feelings of nostalgia, you can still buy popcorn from their vintage machine, and little one’s can still ride “Sandy” the mechanical horse – both just a dime, and both original from the 1960’s! The vintage feel and character is one of the many experiences you’ll love and remember. To read more about the history behind this store you can visit their site to read all about it!
When you walk in it’s easy to get lost in the variety of sections they have – each turn offering something new! The best thing to do is start from the front of the store and make your way down. If you feel lost or have any questions, their staff has always been friendly and willing to help out. My experience each time with the workers has always been pleasant.
I’m weak when it comes to anything sweet… I love my candy! So, Vidler’s candy bar section always sends me straight to heaven. My favorite thing about it would have to be that they carry a lot of old-time candy that you can’t find just anywhere. It will be nice to share my favorite candies I had growing up with my kids, just like my parents did by bringing me here as a kid!
Even though I have been to Vidler’s plenty of times growing up this was Isaiah’s first trip. He absolutely loved it and had a blast picking out a toy for himself and something little for his soon to be sister!
If you live in the Buffalo area and haven’t made your way over to visit, I would mark it high up on your weekend fun-things-to-do list. If you don’t live near Buffalo but someday plan to pass through remember to write down Vidler’s 5 and 10 Variety Store. It surly will be an experience you won’t forget!
Vidler’s is located at :

Fun Fact – Vidler’s originally opened under the name, “The Fair”. The 5 and 10 opened in the era of the Great Depression, and the founders were worried if the store wasn’t successful they might tarnish the family name. Later on, after the shop proved it’s success, they changed it to their family name, “Vidler”. The photo above shows the original sign they opened with!
Below is a gallery of photos from this weekends visit! (this is only some of the store, there is much more to look at!)
